Trip to Lundy

August 28, 2009

On 1st August, three groups of Green Ambassadors and other local young people joined together on a trip to Lundy Island. 33 children and 11 adults went in all, to explore the island that can often be seen from the north coast of Devon. The island is the only marine nature reserve in the UK and plays host to many unique animals and plants.

The boat trip over was choppy, and the morning started with rain, but it didn’y dampen spirits. The sun came out on reaching the Island and a quick stop off at the beach to recover (and to watch the grey seals) was in order, before a quick march to the village. A hearty lunch in the island’s pub ‘Marisco’ was had by all, then a beautiful cliff walk to the island’s old lighthouse.  The views were spectacular and we could see the coastline of Devon and Cornwall.

Thankfully the trip back was calm, apart from the highlight of the day, when an RAF helicopter used the boat for practice and winched a crew member on board.
