Tree O’clock

On the 5th of December as part of National tree week, an attempt to break the world record for most number of trees planted in an hour. Between 11am and 12 all around the country people took part in Tree O’Clock. In the Combe Martin community garden 15 trees were planted to add to the mini-orchard and contribute towards the world record target.

Nettlecombe Revisited

The Lynton Green Ambassadors joined the Bridgwater Heritage Ambassadors for a joint residential trip the Field Studies Council centre at Nettlecombe Court. The weather was not as sunny but the group made the most of it and took part in activities such as rocky shore exploration and natural crafts.

Nettlecombe Court.

Last time…

Got there at lunch time.
Team games, battleships, welly wanging and that step thing.
Stream dipping, searching for different types of freshwater animals, bugs etc.
Setting out mammal traps to be opened the next morning.
Went for a night walk around the grounds to see if we could find any tracks from animals.
Free time J watched TV played games etc.

Next morning…

Breakfast, fry up.
Went to open the mammal traps and Aaron found a wood mouse.
Left…

This time…

Settled in
Played team games outside, welly wanging, thing with a drainpipe and an orange…
Nature walk around the woods, looking for tracks and listening for bird and animals.
Setting mammal traps in the back garden to catch mice or voles etc.
Free time

Tuesday…

Opened the mammal and found 4 wood mice, most of them found in the dark and sheltered bushes.
Went to classroom and talk about the things we would find at a rocky shore.
At 10.45am we went on the bus to the beach at watchcet and looked for rocky shore animals we found crabs, anenomies and limpets and a lot of sticky mud.
At 1pm we had jacket spuds with a selection on toppings after lunch we wrote our blog for the website (which is this)
At 5 we did arts and crafts in the class room were we decorated tiles using things we had found on the nature walk and down the beach.
At 6pm we had dinner of pizza and chips.
At 7.30 we went out for a bonfire.
At 8.45pm we came back into the centre (good timing it was just starting to rain).
9.00 we socialized with the other people enjoying the last night at Nettlecombe.

Nicola’s Lundy Trip

Lundy 1^st August 2009

Went on the boat at 8:30,

It was very very very rough and lots of little kids were sick…

Got to Lundy about… 10:30 I think

Sat on the beach to let the kids recover from the sickness on the boat

Then we walked upppp a bigggg hill to the pub. . and had foooddd

And chased some chickens… hahaa

Went to the light house and went to the top of it. Something like 167 steps, can’t really remember.

Then some of the others went back to the village while we went for a walk down the other end of the island.

Saw some wild ponies which were very tame and came towards us and followed us.

Walked to the ruins of a house (saw fireplaces etc. very interesting :S ) lol

Then walked back to the village, went in the shop then back down to the beach where we waited for the boat.

The trip back was nice, not rough at all, don’t think anyone was sick.

Then a helicopter from Chivenor landed a man on the boat.

Then picked him up again.

Got back at about 7:45 and bought chips wooo J Good day J

Bob’s Farm

The Green Ambassadors from Combe Martin, Ilfracombe and Lynton went to visit Parsonage Farm on Exmoor. Not only did they find out about some of the rare and interesting animals that Bob looks after, but they helped to plant some hazel trees, which hopefully will play host to dormice and other woodland creatures.

Mini Beasts

The green Ambassadors of Combe Martin braved the rain to make a mini beast mansion for the bugs in their Community Garden. The rain did help provide entertainment in the form of a mud slide that developed as the children worked!

Otter tracking

In the Community Garden in Combe Martin Green Ambassadors enlisted the help of otter expert Andy from the Field Studies Council to see if otters were present in the garden. It didn’t take long to descover the rather smelly evidence that an otter had recently visited the garden, and marked the spot!

Mini Beasts

To help promote a habitat for little creatures the Green Ambassadors of Ilfracombe built a mini-beast mansion in their school grounds. The structure will provide dark dwelling spots for Beatles, woodlice, worms and many other little creatures.

Piles Mill

Green Ambassadors from Combe Martin went to visit Mike, a woodcarver in Porlock. They took with them their designs for a sign to go in their Community garden. Mike agreed to make the deign for them using a combination of their designs. While they were there the children looked at Mikes previous work in the museum and some enormous chain saw sculptures in the surrounding area.

Combe Martin Community Garden

The Green Ambassadors of Combe Martin have been working hard to create a Community Garden next to the Umber in Combe Martin.

The sight was cleared in November last year by adult volunteers from community groups, Exmoor National park and local PCSO officers ready for the young people to make their mark. Since then nature has had its way, and wild flowers grew in abundance.

The young people hoped to keep the area very natural, protecting the habitat for many wild creatures, while allowing people to enjoy the nature in this secluded spot.

After a visit to The Eden Project in Cornwall, the children designed and created their own Willow maize, mimicking some of those they had played in. Willow was also placed on the high banks on the entrance to the sight, covering the steep drop and creating a natural barrier.
